WearSmith: the mini iPhone connected breathalyzer has passed between our lips, photos and impressions

Imagined by its creator
while he tried in vain to convince one of his guests that he was not
unable to leave after the meal, the "WearSmith" breathalyzer is in the process of
finalized via a crowdfunding campaign started this
week.

Wein
let's talk here
, the manufacturer sent us aprototypeof
its compact and connected iPhone breathalyzer. A few drinks later, here are
feedback on photos and the functioning of this little device.

First contact and getting started

In visual and packaging terms, although it is a "prototype" and then
that the final version will only arrive in one or two months, here we have a product
almost finished. Packaging, documentation (in English) are also already
present. Rather a reassuring aspect for a product in a fundraising campaign
participatory.

The tester is accompanied by a small strap which attaches to the tower in
rubber.

The WearSmith itself is a small plastic square weighing just 20g,
available in several colors. It has a display on the front panel,
and a button discreetly located just below (black triangle).

On each side, a space is provided to allow breathing and
pass the air thus exhaled to the interior sensor.

A button battery is provided, it is advertised as offering autonomy
3 months on standby and 1000 measurements according to the manufacturer (not verified for
obvious reasons!). The first start requires patience
several tens of seconds with a percentage displayed. This time
initialization is no longer necessary the following times.

Use is very simple since once turned on, after waiting
one second, the built-in blue display indicates that it is ready to read the
measurement: it then displays vertical arrows. Remains to blow to 1 cm
approximately from the orifice for 5 seconds, the display again indicates with a
change of these arrows when the sufficient quantity of air has been reached.
Immediately, the display indicates that the analysis is in progress and
displays the result directly on the screen, in mg/liter.

So far, we have seen it clearly,no need for a smartphone, the
tester is autonomous. Practical for those who want to do a quick read for themselves
or… For a friend who sees fit to get behind the wheel while he is
clearly very tipsy!

But thebreathalyzer is also connected by bluetooth and can
communicate with an iPhone application
. This is not final,
is in English but allows you to see that the main functions are already
implemented.

The “tests”

In practice, the device works well in terms of measuring:
that is to say that in all cases, without blowing hard the measurement is
carried out and the result displayed quickly
.

Used on an empty stomach, it displayed each time and for several people the
good value to know0 mg/litres.

But we had to go further.

So we took out a few drinks and listening only to professional duty,
we tried a few measures. First point, it is clearly indicated that we
should not blow immediately after raising the elbow but wait 20 minutes
at least (in fact it takes at least 30 minutes for the alcohol to be absorbed
by blood). Then, the iPhone app once measured the alcohol level,
l’displays with estimates of the time needed to return to
young
, thanks to the user profile. The statistics are
preserved and recorded allowing their evolution to be seen.

Here a result after a few glasses, and the return to a correct rate over time
hours:

Attention: impossible to validate the measurements of this
test, being neither familiar with this type of product, nor equipped for it, nor
calibration specialist. What we will simply say is that the
values have varied, over time and depending on
what had been drunk
with consistency.

Furthermore, inl’article
presentation
, many of you have noted that this type of device
needed regular calibration to display correct values.
Nothing is displayed in the instructions, thequestion was asked and we
will update the article as soon as we have feedback on this aspect
. On
note that the device sometimes displays a wait symbol before it can perform
the measurement, the instructions indicate that this is a calibration phase, without
we cannot know more.

In the end, here is an accessory that appearsalmost finalized
according to the prototype received, whichmeasure every timeet
communicates seamlessly with the iPhone equipped with the associated application. Very
compact and lightweight, it is easily transportable. We cannot comment on
the reliability and reality of the measurements but teaching can still be
be taken from it: no inconsistencies in time or fanciful readings
were not encountered.
