iOS 12 is available: how to update iPhone and iPad, main new features + WatchOS 5 and tvOS 12

After numerous “Beta” test versions,iOS 12is finally available for everyone! It is therefore possible to take advantage of new features and better performance on compatible iPhones and iPads.

iOS 12 focuses onperformance and stability improvements, but this new version is not without new features. We talked about itin these articles, etlisted more than 60 new features and changes here. Note that tvOS 12 and watchOS 5 are also out for those who have Apple Watch and Apple TV.

To take advantage of it, you will therefore have to update your machine. Nothing rocket science though, but a few steps to follow to ensure everything goes smoothly. So here's how to download and install iOS 12.

iOS 12 compatible iPhones and iPads

The following iPhones can install the iOS 12 update (the same as iOS 11)

Comment installer iOS 12

First of all, if you have not already done so, do not hesitate to consult our article onpreparing your device for the iOS update. Once ready for installation, two solutions are possible: OTA (wireless) or iTunes.

For those who tested the beta and installed the latest GM, it appears to be similar, but for those who want to force the update,see here how to proceed(it's the same as iOS 11).

iOS 12 update OTA (without iTunes connection)

To update OTA, you must go to Settings, choose General, then Software Update. The update should appear there. Then click on Install.

PLEASE NOTE: OTA updates do not necessarily appear immediately on the machine.If you're in a hurry, go through iTunesfor a more traditional installation.

iOS 12 update via iTunes

To update via iTunes, you must connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer on which iTunes is installed, then click on the corresponding icon in the software, an icon which normally appears after a few seconds.

Then just click onTo updateon the right, below the small announcement indicating that the new version of iOS is available.

From there, follow the few steps indicated, some operations are carried out (unlocking your iPhone, in particular), but the procedure remainsvery basic.

In both cases, it is necessary to demonstratea little patience, because it is classic that Apple's servers areheavily in demand in the first hoursdepending on the availability of the update.

But as usual, iOS 12 is accompanied by several other systems intended for Apple devices. This is the case today with the Apple Watch, as well as the Apple TV.

Apple Watch Update

With iOS 12, the Apple Watch will also receive its new operating system version. It is therefore watchOS 5 which accompanies it.

To update the watch, you must first update the iPhone to which it is “linked”. It is then within the “Watch” application that the update is carried out.

First of all, you need to make sure that the iPhone, in iOS 12, is connected to Wi-Fi and charged with at least 50% battery remaining. * The watch must be charging on its support.

You must then select the Watch application on the iPhone, go toGeneral, then inUpdate. An update should be available, if not, wait...

  • Otherwise, click Download, then Install once the download is complete.
  • On the next screen, the system asks for the iPhone protection password. It must be completed on the iPhone.
  • Accept the terms and conditions.
  • Then click Install on iPhone on Apple Watch.
  • Once the installation is complete, you are good to take full advantage of the new OS on your watch

Apple TV update

To update the Apple TV, if it is not directly done or offered, you must go to the “Settings” > “System” > “Software updates” menu.

Select “Update Software”. It is then suggested to update, by downloading and installing the new version of tvOS, to do this, select “Download and install”.

Photos

* The new “For You” tab helps you discover the great photos in your library with Recommended Photos, Suggested Effects and more.

* Sharing suggestions proactively recommend that you share photos taken at events with the people in them.

* Search for photos based on the location, business, or event where you took them.

* Importing from a camera is now faster, and a large preview lets you examine items in detail before importing.

* RAW format support for photo editing.

Camera

* Portrait mode has been improved to preserve subtle details between the subject and background when using the Scene Lighting and Mono Scene Lighting effects.

* QR codes are highlighted in the camera frame, making them easier to scan.

Messages

* Memoji, a new form of customizable Animoji, make your conversations in Messages more expressive with varied and fun characters designed in your image.

* New Animoji: T-Rex, ghost, koala and tiger.

* Memoji and Animoji can now wink and stick out their tongues.

* New Camera Effects let you add Animoji, filters, text effects, iMessage sticker packs, and shapes to photos and videos taken in Messages.

* Animoji recordings can now be up to 30 seconds long.

Screen time

* Screen Time provides detailed information and tools to help you and your family better organize the time you spend using apps and visiting websites.

* Know the usage time of apps and different categories of apps, the number of notifications received and the frequency of device activation.

* App limits help you set how much time you or your child can spend in apps and websites.

* Screen Time lets parents manage how their children use iPhone and iPad directly from their own iOS devices.

Do not disturb

* Turn off Do Not Disturb after a preset time, when you leave a location, or at the end of an event on your calendar.

* Do Not Disturb at Night hides all notifications on the lock screen while you sleep.

Notifications

* Notifications from the same app are automatically grouped to make notification management easier.

* Instant Setting lets you control notification settings directly from the lock screen.

* AR Glance extends augmented reality across iOS by letting you view AR objects with built-in apps like News, Safari, and Files and share them with friends via iMessage and Mail.

* New augmented reality app allowing you to measure objects and spaces.

* Draw lines on surfaces or in space to take measurements, and tap a line's label to view more information.

Privacy and security
