- Apple has just revealed the finalists for the Apple Design Awards
- The winners, announced during WWDC, will be offered a unique gray cube-shaped prize.
- The Headspace app, which collects a lot of personal data, is among the finalists despite Apple's efforts to respect privacy
We're just talking about it: the Worldwide Developer Conference is getting ready, before the opening keynote scheduled for June 5 at 7 p.m. (Paris time). During the event, it will be possible to follow the award ceremony of theApple Design Awards, which reward the best apps available on Cupertino devices. However, you will have to get up early (or not go to bed), since the live broadcast is scheduled for 3:30 a.m. on the morning of June 6.
The key reward for the participants? Last year it was an impressivecube an aluminum pig, whose appearance is reminiscent of that of MacBook Pro chassis. A reflective Apple logo is installed on one side of the artifact, with the words “Apple Design Award” on the other hand and the name of the winning application on yet another hand. This product is only published for this competition and it is not possible to find it elsewhere, what's more the winners can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Rather rare, the object could increase in value over time – given the numerous auctions of expensive derivative products.
Who are the finalists?
This year, WWDC has decided to reward developers in six very distinct categories: innovation, visuals and graphics, social impact, interaction, entertainment and fun as well as inclusion. A strong theme that recalls theengagementsof Apple in its favor, even if the environment seems to have been left aside for the 2023 edition.
Among allfinalists, we find in particularDuolingo, which Apple says provides an experience “memorable, engaging and satisfying“. The platform offers to learn many languages with a gamified method, such as Italian, English, Spanish, Romanian and even German. With this, the apps competing to win the silver cube are alsoFlighty, an alternative to Flightradar24 for Mac, gamesResident Evil VillageetDiablo Immortalor Camo, a video editing specialist.
The Headspace case in the spotlight
As for apps with a positive impact, Apple also presents the no less well-knownHeadspace, which with its guided meditation offers a contemporary solution to certain mental health problems. The only downside, and not the least, especially when we know that Apple is very keen on it: you will have to leave your private life aside. Astudyfrom the Mozilla Foundation has in fact demonstrated that the creators of this app collect a lot of personal data.
