Since the start of the year, Apple has recorded its best results in its history, in terms of turnover and income. Performance is underpinned by good iPhone sales, but also the various services as well as the famous “Others” category. This includes the Apple Watch, iPod, Apple TV, Beats accessories and AirPods.
The results of thethird quarter of 2018just fell. They are like the first twowith very good figures. Announcing the results is a particularly important exercise, since they reflect to a certain extent the success or name of certain products.
So here's an overview of Apple's latest quarterly results, the charts and what to remember:
First important point, Luca Maestri, Apple's financial director, announced that the firmwill no longer reveal the number of units soldfor the next quarterly results. It will therefore be necessary to rely on analysts' estimates to get an idea of sales.
For the next quarterly results, Apple will however continue to publishincome from each category.
Apple's best third quarter
Apple's turnover reached62.9 billiondollars in the third quarter of 2018, an increase of14 to 18%compared to the same quarter last year. Net revenues reached11.5 billionthe dollars.
This is thebest third trimesterof a calendar year since the creation of the apple firm. Comparatively, at the same period last year, turnover was52.6 billiondollars with net income of10.7 billion.
During the third quarter of 2018, Apple sold46,9 millions d’iPhone, an almost identical figure compared to last year for the same period, when Apple sold46,7 millions d’iPhone.
During the third quarter of 2018, Tim Cook says the launch of the iPhone XS and XS Max was very successful. However, we will have to wait until the last quarter of the year to see if the iPhone XS, XS Max and especially the XR have met with the expected success with users.
Sales of iPhone X, 8, XS and XS Max allow Apple to record a29% increase in revenuefor the “smartphone” category, thanks among other things to the higher prices of the iPhone X, XS and XS Max. Incidentally, the iPhone X disappears from the catalog.
The latter makes it possible to increase the average price of the iPhone to around800 dollars.
The iPad on the decline
Apple's tablet records a drop in sales compared to last year, since the Apple firm sold9,7 millions d’iPad.Comparatively, last year at the same time, Apple sold10.3 million iPads sold.
This is likely because Apple didn't unveil new iPad Pros early this summer, as it did last year. This figure will certainly change with the release of the new iPad Pro 2018.
Apple says that nearly half of iPad sales in the last quarter were attributed to new users.
The Mac remains stable
Regarding the Mac, the Cupertino company sold5.3 million Macs, or adecrease of 1.6%compared to last year at the same period, when Apple sold 5.4 million units.
Apple mentions that the new MacBook Pros in July helped achieve record quarterly revenues for the Mac category.
The Apple Watch and AirPods continue to be a hit
The so-called “Other” product category at Apple, which includes the Apple Watch, iPod, Apple TV, HomePod, Beats accessories and AirPods, continues tomake a box. The turnover is increasing to reach4.23 billion, compared to 3.23 at the same period last year, i.e. an31% increase.
Apple is renaming the “Others” category to “Wearables, Home, and Accessories,” to better reflect the products in that category.
“Services” reaches a new peak
Apple's “Services” category, which includes Apple Pay, but also the App Store, iTunes and Apple Music, recorded revenue inincrease of 17%with$9.98 billionin revenue, much better than the 8.50 billion last year at the same period. This is theApple's best quarter for the “Services” category.
Tim Cook announces strong growth in paid subscriptions, reaching around 330 million users.
Apple CEO also announces exceptional performance for Apple Pay, includingtrading volume tripledcompared to last year. Apple Pay now generates more transactions than PayPal Mobile.
But still
Concerning the distribution of income between its different products and services, the iPhone remains the most profitable with59% of total revenuegenerated by the Apple firm, followed by 16% for “Services” and 12% linked to Mac sales. Just behind, the 7% for the “Other” category and the 6% for the iPad bring up the rear.
In summary, the quarterly results are excellent for Apple, which is achieving itsbest third quarter at the start of the year since its creationthanks in particular to sales generated by the iPhone, as well as its increasingly profitable “Services” and “Other” categories.
This is therefore an exceptional year for Apple, with arecord first, second and third quarters. We hope and imagine that the fourth quarter will be just as good, thanks in particular to the sales of the new iPhones, including the XR model.
