We learn via a new report from Bloomberg that Apple has hiredSamsung's battery manager. This could suggest the desire to create a battery optimized for the iPhone and perhaps other products in-house.
Before his recruitment in December 2018, Soonho Ahn was vice-president of a Samsung subsidiary which designs lithium-ion batteries for the Korean giant. He was present at the head of Samsung batteries during the debacle ofbatteries that caught fire, without knowing his level of involvement.
Before Samsung, he workedmore than 10 years at LGin battery design. He also worked on the design of anext generation of battery technology.
Within Apple, he was hired as “global head of battery developments“. It therefore appears from his experience and the title of his position that he will lead a division dedicated to battery design.
At the same time, since the beginning of last year, Apple was in talks to buy directly from minersyou cobalt, a key component of lithium-ion batteries, but not only.
Apple wants to gradually reduce its dependence on external suppliers for the various components of the iPhone. This would also make it possible to offer components designed to work optimally with the iPhone.
We have already seen the result of such a strategy with the Ax chip. We therefore imagine a battery that would offer a very good lifespan and better autonomy. Perhaps even new battery technology would be under development at Apple.
