Apple unveils “Passwords”, its new password manager

iOS 18 and macOS 15 will benefit from a new application for password management, simply titled “Passwords“. This is what Apple has just announced during itsWWDC conference. The rumors were therefore correct. Here are the details that we know about this new feature at this stage.

Passwords”: the key features

  • Compatibility:the application will be available on iOS 18 and macOS 15. To take advantage of it, you will have to wait until the release of these updates, which will also be reserved for recent iPhones and Macs. If your iPhone is too old for iOS 18, you can still enjoy the appAccess keychainson Mac, or functionalityTrousseau iCloudon iPhone. Or, you have to turn to an alternative (Enpass, 1Password, Bitwarden, etc.)
  • Synchronisation :automatic and secure via iCloud. As for thetrousseau, automatically find your passwords on iPhone and Mac.
  • Wi-Fi passwords: these codes are also recorded inPasswords.

  • Supportidentification keys: to connect to your favorite apps without a password and with Face ID or Touch ID. Dashlane or 1Password notably integrate this functionality.
  • Sharing: users can share passwords with third parties, such as family or colleagues.
  • Analyse: the Passwords app is able to tell you whether the password you have chosen is strong enough or not.
  • Safari: the browser, under macOS 15 Sequoia, offers integration withPasswordsto complete the password fields for you.

Do you think that with this new app, Apple will be able to match already well-established third-party solutions, such as Dahslane, Nordpass, Secrets or even Proton Pass and others? Some have already been able to test the platform thanks to the beta version for developers:

Three complaints…

1) Search is *terrible*. I'm not even sure what it's searching on. Unusable.
2) Coming from 1Password, transferring over the 2FA stuff will be a hassle.
