Apple yesterday held a press conference in France dedicated to Apple Pay, with several announcements specific to the French market.
First of all, Apple has confirmed that they are in discussions with the city of Paris, regarding adding the Navigo card to the iPhone. We do not yet know in what form a digital card can be in Wallet.
For several months, the adoption of Apple Pay by various French banks has been accelerating, and Apple confirms that Apple Pay should arrive in 2019 for Credit Agricole customers.
But the big part of Apple's conference is the announcement of apartnership with Pathé Gaumont, the number one cinema in France. Pathé Gaumont cinemas now offercinema tickets in NFCto its customers equipped with an iPhone.
This new service will be deployed on June 29, on the occasion of the cinema festival, in all the French group's cinemas.
How will this work?
A user can purchase a cinema ticket in the Pathé Gaumont application with Apple Pay. The latter will then offer to save their ticket in the Wallet application on the iPhone.
Once in a Pathé Gaumont cinema, the user does not need to queue at the checkouts, they can go directly through a terminal. By passing the iPhone, even with the screen off, in front of a terminal, the ticket appears, you then just have to confirm with Touch ID or Face ID to enter the cinema.
This new method is much more practical than the old one, based on a QR code to scan.
Pathé Gaumont shared several interesting statistics, which confirm the importance of a partnership with Apple. We learn that 50% of tickets sold in its cinemas are dematerialized, and half of these tickets are purchased on iPhone.
