Apple is considering making a 1TB iPhone

It was with this tweet that Jon Prosser relaunched the discussion around the storage capacities of iPhones. If today the iPhone 12 range can have up to 512 GB of capacity, the Cupertino company would therefore consider doubling the latter. If Prosser did not provide more information on this announcement, many believe that Apple could cross the 1 TB barrier as early as next year, with the iPhone 13.

The brand has accustomed its consumers to doubling the maximum storage capacity of its iPhones every two years. However, it did not do so this year, which means that 2021 should be a good year for Apple.

Today the iPhone 12 is available with 64 GB minimum and 512 GB in its maximum capacity. The iPhone 12 Pro starts with storage of at least 128 GB. High storage capacities, but which could quickly be exceeded by the use that some will make of HDR video with Dolby Vision, which will require a lot of space to be stored.

If Apple offers external storage solutions, notably with iCloud, it is storage within the iPhone which is most often favored. Thus, many users very quickly reach the limits of the latter, even if the capacities increase from year to year.

Always more storage

As a reminder, Apple has blocked its maximum storage capacity at 512 GB for 3 years. The iPhone XS and XS Max were the first to benefit from this capability. Before, the maximum was 256 GB for the iPhone iPhone 12 Pro hits the market with 128 GB, minimum.

Developments also made possible by new compression technologies. Today it is much easier to store 1TB and those thanks to the improvement of storage systems as a whole. Without going into detail, it is wrong to think that Apple is doubling the storage of its iPhone by simply doubling the space allocated to it.

The reality is more complex and manufacturers must find new methods to increase storage capacities without physically taking up much more space.
