Apple Maps now displays “Black Lives Matter” written on the street in Washington

While George Floyd died two weeks ago under the knee of a police officer, protests are still ongoing in the United States and elsewhere. Some of these took place in Washington, where Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser authorized a collective of artists to paint the inscription “Black Lives Matter» on the ground in huge yellow letters. All a few hundred meters from the White House - a way of displaying his clear disagreement with Donald Trump's management of this new crisis.

This has not helped relations between the President of the United States and the city's mayor, who officially opposes the use of military forces in the protests. Trump used his favorite communication channel, Twitter, to call Muriel Bowser “incompetent».

The inscription “Black Lives Matter» is more than 200 meters long and points directly towards the square facing the White House. The latter was also renamed “Black Lives Matter Plaza» after the slogan of these demonstrations was painted on the ground.

For its part, Apple has decided to update its images so that this new feature can be visible directly from its Maps application. This is now the case, as we were able to verify on the mobile version of the app.

In addition to the inscription, Apple also added the fact that it was Black Lives Matter Plaza. Google Maps did the same, updating the location name, but the images don't yet show the painted street.

This isn't the first time Apple has shown support for recent protests. Following the death of George Floyd,Tim Cook sent a public letter to his employeesin which he indicates that the brand must do more, but also “reexamine[ses]own opinions and actions in light of pain that is deeply felt but too often ignored».
