Apple Silicon: Macs say goodbye to Intel processors

Yesterday evening the opening keynote of theWorldwide Developer Conference, bringing together thousands of spectators all around the globe in front of their screens. The opportunity for Craig Federighi to lift the veil on all the new features of iOS 14, but also a historic moment in the history of its company. Indeed, after fourteen years of successful collaboration, it has just announced that it would end its partnership with Intel. As a reminder, the founder is currently supplying the processors for all Macs sold.

Among them, we find in particular the latest 13-inch MacBook Pro, but also its 16-inch big brother released in November and the lighter Air version. But don't worry if you have acquired one of these models: their manufacturer ensures that even after the applications have been brought into compliance with thetransition, these will remain compatible with older, up-to-date macOS devices.

Two years of work

The first computers equipped with this technology, calledApple Siliconand based on an ARM architecture as is already the case for iPhone and iPad chips, will be sold before the end of the last quarter. They could therefore be announced in October, during the keynote which will also launch the potential iPhone 12. As for editions equipped with competing CPUs, they should no longer be available in the Apple firm's stores by 2022.

Among the publishers already in the kitchen to offer software optimized for these proprietary components, we find in particular Microsoft andAdobe. During the live session, demonstrations also proved that machines running this solution react particularly well to the energy-intensive demands of Photoshop or Lightroom. Furthermore, access to video games such as Tomb Raider or titles available in Apple Arcade should also allow Cupertino to compete more seriously with PCs runningWindows.
