Apple could embark on a big new project. In 2020 the Apple brand began a significant transition, moving from Intel chips to “in-house” processors produced by TSMC and designed by Apple itself. Today the Cupertino company would like to launch a new transition.
So the Apple brand could switch the screens of its devices from LCD technology to OLED. According to rumor, this change should be effective by 2027 and it will concern iPads as well as MacBooks and iMac desktop computers. According to information from Bob Raikes, who is based on the work of the company Omdia, OLED would be the new screen technology for Apple.
OLED: Apple's new revolution
The Apple brand could begin its transition in 2024 with the iPad Pro and the MacBook Air. Today OLED represents between 2 and 3 million devices, but this screen technology could experience crazy growth, exceeding 80 million devices by 2028.
A market explosion which should follow Apple's various launches. Apple should therefore offer an iPad Pro OLED from 2024 before focusing on its laptops. Finally, in 2027, the Apple brand could be interested in the iMac and offer an OLED version in turn.
According to the company Omdia, the iMac OLED should have the right to a 42-inch XXL screen. A new size for Apple which today offers a much smaller product (24 inches). Omdia explains that this transition should take place over several years and an “intermediate” model should arrive within a few months with an LCD screen and a 32-inch panel.
Apple wants to break its glass ceiling
According to several sources, Apple could take advantage of this switch from LCD technology to OLED to regain control of the production of some of its products. The Cupertino company would like to give less importance to Samsung and LG, which are today Apple's two subcontractors with regard to screens.
In the same way that Apple no longer uses Intel for its chips, Apple could choose “in-house” production (always with a subcontractor) and thus take a technological lead over Samsung, its main competitor. .
