The Blommberg newspaperalready predicted it a few weeks ago, a new Apple TV should arrive in 2021. And this has just been confirmed by Mark Gurman, journalist for the American publication and great connoisseur of the Californian firm. The latter has in fact published a new report according to which a new TV box is in the works at Apple, for release next year, and with several notable new features, including anew processor and new remote control.
The processor could provide a big performance gain compared to the 2017 generation still on shelves at the end of the year. On this subject, the source indicates that Apple would like to take advantage of the new chip to make the Apple TV, or at least the next model, a box as capable in the field of video games as in that of television and video streaming.
If we base ourselves on the history of the Apple TV, with a 3rd generation released in 2012, then a new Apple TV HD released in 2015 followed by an Apple TV 4K arriving in 2017, we can see that the gap between generations has not exceeded 3 years, even since the very first box appeared in 2007. See Apple release a new model next year after 4 years of life for the older generation would therefore not really be a surprise in itself. Even less when Gurman thinks so too.
It remains to be seen what improvements will indeed be there. But it would be interesting to see Apple move into gaming for the Apple TV, which could help differentiate the product from its mostly much cheaper and much more popular competitors.
Be aware in any case that if you intend to buy an Apple TV, at this stage, it is perhaps better to wait for the release of the next generation which should probably not take too long.
