Apple launched at the end of 2020M1 chips, developed within the walls of Apple Park. But Apple's ambition does not stop at these computer components. It is also banking on “homemade” 5G modems. For the latter, Apple had notably spent a billion dollars tobuy the Intel division.
If these modems are not expected to arrive immediately on iPhones, another chip built by Apple could join the range as early as 2025. According to information from the Bloomberg press agency, Apple intends to adda unique Bluetooth and wifi chip in its next Apple TV.
A full-scale test
In a recent article, Mark Gurman confirms Ming-Chi Kuo's statements. He explains that Apple will launch this chip in its iPhone 17 next September, but as if to test this chip one last time, and launch production upstream, the Apple brand would have had the idea of integrating this component to his next Apple TV. Some rumors also mention the arrival of a HomePod, with this particular chip inside.
These two products could “set the stage” forl’iPhone 17. Apple should take the opportunity to test TSMC's skills in designing these slightly different components. For the user, the arrival of this chip should not change much. They could even lose performance if Apple cannot develop a chip as powerful as that of Broadcom, which equips Apple devices today.
Broadcom: the big loser
The arrival of this new chip should not please Broadcom in any case. Apple is its biggest customer and brings it 20% of turnover. The company made itself known to the general public in 2017 when it made a takeover offer to Qualcomm. The sums proposed at the time exceeded $100 billion.
