5G modem on iPhone: like Han, Apple will go it alone in 2025

  • Apple delayed before marketing 5G phones
  • In question, a conflict with Qualcomm
  • Its ambition is to manufacture its own 5G chips, we already knew that, but the rumor is becoming clearer

Apple's desire to reduce its dependence on other brands for 5G chips is coming to fruition. We were already talking about it at the start of the year, and today the subject comes back to the table. At the time, it was Mark Gurman of Bloomberg and Ming Chi Kuo who spread the rumor.

Initially, these modems were announced for 2023.However, their release datehas been postponed several times, Gurman rather mentioned 2024 or even 2025. And yesterday, Ming-Chi spoke about it again in a file and mentioned the availability of these modems for 2025, without further details.

Apple and 5G, a path strewn with pitfalls

While the first smartphone models to offer 5G appeared in France in 2019, Apple was not able to offer the functionality at the same time as its competitors. At issue is a series of legal conflicts involving the Cupertino company against the main supplier of 5G modems: Qualcomm.

In this context, the Cupertino company wanted to find an alternative andturned to Intel. The latter saw in this partnership the opportunity to take some market share from Qualcomm. However, everything did not go as planned. Indeed, after long battles, Apple has decided to bury the hatchet with Qualcomm. Which pushed Intel to abandon the 5G modem market.

It was only a year after the others that Apple was able to offer very high-speed connectivity to its customers, with the introduction of the iPhone 12 to the market.

Despite everything, the project

Apple knows how to be resilient when necessary, and that was the case with the Qualcomm affair. We can, however, think that all these pitfalls contributed to Apple's desire to put an end to being dependent on another brand for its 5G modems.

It is nevertheless interesting to note that Mark Gurman affirmed at the beginning of the year that Apple was considering initially launching its own 5G chipsonly on a single high-end model. The transition to independence from Qualcomm should be gradual.

Let's hope that the Cupertino company quickly manufactures its chips itself, who knows, this could perhaps lower the price of iPhones (yes, we are sometimes dreamers).
