Apple is facing a new class action lawsuit concerning its batteries. Filed this week in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, the complaint once again targets the Apple brand's batteries.
In the document, the plaintiffs attest that the way Apple restricts its batteries harms iPhone owners, because it also restricts the performance of the brand's phones. More specifically, the 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus models are the subject of the complaint. The authors of the class action are seeking damages from the firm, but no amount has been mentioned.
A controversy that has targeted Apple since the end of 2017
It is clear that Apple seems to have difficulty completely separating itself from this controversy which dates from the end of 2017. At that time, Battery Gate began when revelations made it possible to establish a link between the iPhone battery status, iOS updates and phone performance.
Apple initially denies it and does not speak publicly before confirming this link. Indeed, the Apple brand reveals that it has indeed made an iOS update which blocks the performance of an iPhone beyond a certain level in the case where the battery is too old.
Obviously, Apple is quickly accused of planned obsolescence, because this suggests that the performance of the iPhone is limited on purpose and that to take full advantage of it, the user must buy a more recent phone. But for the brand, it is precisely the opposite, because this update allows the device to avoid turning off unexpectedly and, therefore, to last longer.
The apple brand apologizes andlaunches battery replacement programwhich ended during the transition to 2019. One could have assumed that Apple had definitively buried Battery Gate, but that does not seem to be entirely the case, in view of this new complaint.
