Duringthe presentation of its new iPhones, and in particular the Pro versions, Apple has not hesitated to emphasize one of its main assets: its cameras. And for good reason, the firm has done its utmost to offer its various users the best possible experience.
On Monday, September 18, Apple Vice President of Camera Software Engineering Jon McCormack and Senior Director of iPhone Product Marketing Maxime Veron spoke about this for PetaPixel. During this interview, the two men discussed Apple's historical vision regarding iPhone cameras. They then expressed this vision through the new features offered on the Pro and Pro Max models.
The goal for Apple regarding the iPhone 15 Pro camera isthat it suits everyone. Ranging from the photography professional to the parent simply wanting to capture some memories. A major challenge when we know the expectations of different users, which can be diametrically opposed.
Enabling people to pursue their vision
For beginners, the firm wants photo taking to beeasy and intuitive. This results in a clean and fluid interface without information overload, by limiting settings to a minimum and simplifying them as much as possible. The new iPhone Pro and Pro Max also offer the possibility of choosing afocal distancein photo mode24 mm, 28 mm ou 32 mm. This allows you to change the perspective of the shot depending on a given situation.
The 32mm focal length is, for example, ideal for taking photos from afar, or for a close-up. While that of 24 is perfect for capturing landscapes or groups of people.
Concerning professionals, the firm wishes to offer them advanced functionalities. This includes for example, andas mentioned previously here, ProRes Log encoding. Which as a reminder allows you to capture a wider dynamic page by accentuating the difference between the lightest and darkest areas of a capture. The problem with this type of encoding is that it generates very large files, which can fill up to 50 times more space than a typical video. This is why Apple now offers the ability to record ProRes videos directly on an SSD.
Finding a balance between these two goals
Satisfying everyone is a difficult task. But to achieve this more effectively, the firm seems to want to concentrate more on what it does best: making it as easy to use as possible. For the vast majority of our customers, our goal is to simply process everything in the background so that the process is invisible and out of reach so people can take stunning photos and videos and capture beautiful, lifelike moments with just one click.»
The firm therefore wishes to maintain a refined experience for its average users and should rely more on third-party developers to satisfy professionals.
