Last Friday Apple sold its firstApple Vison Proin store. The Apple brand has thus succeeded in its bet, launching into the world of virtual reality headsets by offering an experience very different from the competition. If the Apple Vision Pro has hundreds of features, each more interesting than the last, Apple has developed a new system for unlocking the device which deserves a little more attention.
With Optic ID, Apple has in fact developed an algorithm to recognize the unique character of the iris of an eye. The functionality would be so advanced at Apple that it would be able to differentiate between the left eye and the right eye of the same person.
Optic ID: Apple's new key feature?
This feature should be the keystone of security on the Apple Vision Pro. In particular, it should make it possible to unlock the headset but also to authorize purchases on Apple Pay or to connect third-party applications to the headset. Apple has also implemented barriers in third-party apps. If the latter already exist on the iPhone or iPad and require the use of Touch ID or Face ID, this security message will still be present in the Apple Vision Pro but it will ask the user to prove their identity with OpticID.
According to Apple, the arrival of a new method to unlock a device must be “a revolution” like Touch ID and Face ID were in their time. In its message, Apple specifies that this functionality works thanks to proprietary technology which allows high-performance eye tracking thanks in particular to LEDs and infrared cameras which make an ultra-precise “Scan” of a person's iris.
For the moment Optic ID only exists on the Apple Vision Pro and no analyst has ventured to announce it on other devices. If the development of this functionality was made possible on Apple's mixed reality headset, Apple could be tempted to launch a similar option on iPhone or iPadto replace Face ID.
