Arrival of Face ID on new Apple devices

  • An Apple patent raises the case for face recognition on a computer
  • This may be a sign of the arrival of Face ID on Mac
  • Microsoft offers an alternative with Windows Hello

Macs could soon be equipped with Face ID biometric unlocking technology. In any case, this is what a patent filed by Apple suggests, which mentions the case of a system similar to the TrueDepth sensor ofiPhone 14 Pro. This component acts as a scanner and makes it possible to recognize a face by projecting several tens of thousands of infrared signals.

This isn't the first time we've heard about the addition of this feature to Apple computers, but rumors about it are still becoming more and more pressing. What's more, Macs recently got a notch at the top of their screen, which is exactly the interface behind which Face ID is hidden on iPhones...

The competition is hard at work

If Apple could soon offer biometric unlocking on Macs, it is also because other laptop manufacturers have already tackled this task with more or less success. Microsoft, for example, has developed the Windows Hello solution embedded in hundreds of PC models, as well as on its own touchscreen tablets: the Surface.

The latter also clearly have what it takes to overshadow theiPad Pro, with a large display area, high-end performance and stylus compatibility. But most cybersecurity studies tend to show that hackers are targeting Windows more than macOS.

There is still work

Despite everything, to deploy Face ID on Mac, Apple will have to deal with a major problem: that of dimensions, precisely. Thus, the iPhone and its almost centimeter thickness give the firm with a capitalization of three trillion dollars plenty of time to hide the TrueDepth sensor under the hood. But with a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air, it's a different story: the thinness of the panel may still prove too limiting for large-scale production...
