Arcep, police officer for telephone operators in
France, published a new report highlighting the measures carried out recently
in the field to verify the operators' commitments in terms of
mobile coverage. The latter in fact had coverage objectives to
respected by January 17, which Arcep did not fail to verify. Without too much
surprises, the 4 major operators have validated these deployment plans
obligatory mainly concerning sparsely populated areas. But efforts
are still to be provided.
In 2G, voice and SMS, concerning town centers, which constitute 1% of the
French population currently, operator coverage reaches 92%.
Only 4 town centers in France are still not covered.
Concerning 3G coverage still in town centers, Orange is at 89%,
SFR and Bouygues Telecom at 87%.
Finally for 4G, concerning sparsely populated areas, the January objective
2017 of 40% population coverage in these locations is achieved for
the 4 operators. They even announced last April to cover 68% of the
population in sparsely populated areas for SFR, 66% for Bouygues Telecom, 58% for
Orange and 45% for Free.
Arcep welcomes these encouraging results, but nevertheless highlights the
fact that for the moment, despite good coverage efforts, 4G remains
still absent for almost a third of the territory. Indeed, while the
operators cover between 80 and 89% of the French population in 4G, between 45
and only 59% of the territory is truly covered.
The next dates corresponding to the following objectives in terms of
deployment of mobile coverage will be on June 30, the date on which
100% of town centers must be covered by 3G, then on January 17, 2022,
date by which 90% of the population in sparsely populated areas must be covered
in 4G on the 800 MHz band.
