Since Android covers all market segments, it has many more users worldwide compared to iOS. However, in the United States, a new trend is emerging.
Indeed, according to a study by Consumer Research Intelligence Partners (CIRP) relayed by the MacRumours site, the two operating systems now have the same market share in the USA. This study would indicate that the two operating systems have shares of 50% on new smartphone activations over the last 12 months.
Quoted by MacRumours, Josh Lowitz, co-founders of CIRP, indicates that for years, Android dominated the American market with a share of more than 60% of new activations.“Over the past two years, however, iOS has closed the gap and now shares the market with Android”, he would have indicated.
Customers increasingly loyal to the Apple brand
The CIRP study also looked at another factor: customer loyalty. And there too, a positive development for Apple, on the American market, would have been observed. Indeed, if Android has always had a stable level of loyalty, from 90% to 93%, that of iOS would have gradually increased, going from 86% in 2018 to 93% today.
“In the most recent quarter, Apple had a loyalty advantage, with 93% of previous iPhone owners upgrading to a new iPhone, compared to 88% of Android owners staying with Android. Over several years, iOS gained about five percentage points in loyalty, while Android remained stable. This has allowed Apple to steadily increase the iOS share of new smartphone activations », says Mike Levin, CIRP Partner.
It remains to be seen whether this situation could further evolve thanks to the’iPhone 12and the iPhone 13. Although the latter should only be an improved version of its predecessor,Apple reportedly expects record sales.
