Apple has decided to publish a new video, titled “Nice Try!“, to be translated into “nice try!” in the language of Molière. But you may have missed it. And for good reason; the content actually comes from the company's YouTube channel dedicated to the Singapore market. We have still not seen the color of it in French, at home. In the short film, the manufacturer promotes one of its biometric unlocking solutions:Face ID. The functionality, which is based on the image stream coming from the TrueDepth sensor installed under theDynamic Islandon the new iPhones, allows you to secure mobiles and tablets. However, not all of the Apple firm's devices are equipped, so much so that the fifth generation iPad Air, for example, makes do with a fingerprint sensor with Touch ID.
Face ID technology could alsoappear on new productsApple, in the future. We don't know exactly which ones, but patents suggest that Apple wants to deploy this technology on itscomputerslaptops and desktop computers. iMacs and MacBook Pros could then be the first to feature face recognition. But Cupertino still needs to be able to produce such technology on a large scale for this type of machine, which does not yet seem to have been achieved. What's more, it is not uncommon to see Tim Cook's company protect inventions which ultimately do not see the light of day in stores.
iPhone 15 and security
Face ID is not the only asset for securityiPhone 15. In fact, these mobiles are also equipped with end-to-end encryption for photos and messages which are stored online within the eponymous and proprietary apps. At the same time, Apple, via theTrousseau iCloud, offers us a complete password manager that is accessible at any time from all of its devices. A value proposition to be compared to that of Dashlane or the native alternative to Google Chrome, but this time confined to the head ecosystem, therefore. Enough to attract the wrath of the competition authority, but that's another story.
Drivers’ iPhone 15s also feature theaccident detection, which, notably through the microphone and the accelerometer, can alert emergency services in the event of a serious problem on the road. With this, let us point out that the Locate app allows you to easily find your cell phone at any time, even if the solution is not infallible. Third-party brand smartphones can also do this, as with the Android Device Manager program accessible from a web browser.
Face ID isn't foolproof either
Coming back to biometric unlocking, let us point out that Face ID, despite its promise of significant security, also remainsfallible.
Several smart people have already succeeded inpiratesthe system, despite the numerous safeguards put in place by Apple to justify its effectiveness. It only takes a few searches on YouTube to see that the manipulation is not always the most difficult to carry out, even if not necessarily within the reach of everyone. Let us point out, moreover, that spyware likePegasusremain today capable of accessing all the data stored in an iOS mobile phone, even if the system is protected by Face ID. And sometimes the owner of the device doesn't even realize it.
Apple is not the only company to offer facial recognition to unlock its devices. Microsoft is therefore developing its own alternative under the name Windows Hello, and as its name suggests, this technology is this time available on hundreds of PC models running the Redmond OS. As for Samsung, it was in 2013 with theGalaxy S4that face detection was offered on its mobiles, several years before the arrival of Face ID on iPhone.`
