An iOS bug puts Wi-Fi out of service, how to avoid it?

This weekend, a new iOS bug was highlighted by security researcher Carl Schou. The latter testified that by trying to join a Wi-Fi network with a certain SSID (network name), this had the effect of making the Wi-Fi of the iOS device completely inoperable, even when joining another Wi-Fi network. -Fi afterwards.

After joining my personal WiFi with the SSID “%p%s%s%s%s%n”, my iPhone permanently disabled it’s WiFi functionality. Neither rebooting nor changing SSID fixes it :~)pic.twitter.com/2eue90JFu3

Until Apple corrects the situation, there are different ways to avoid seeing Wi-Fi malfunction like this.

It actually appears that the “%” sign in the Wi-Fi network SSID is causing the problem. Therefore, for the moment, we advise you to avoid joining any Wi-Fi network whose name begins with “%”, and/or whose name contains one or more “%” signs. At the same time, avoid naming the Wi-Fi network of your internet box with very special characters, including “%”. Reserve characters such as “%”, question mark or similar signs for the Wi-Fi password in question.

Finally, if you have ever tried to join a Wi-Fi network causing the Wi-Fi of the iOS device to malfunction, here is how to get out of the situation:

  • Go to the appSettings, sectionGeneral
  • Then go toReset, to pressReset network settings
  • Confirm the operation

The iPhone should restart automatically, after which everything should be back to normal.
