Access codes or the end of the password on iOS 16, detailed by Apple

At the Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple presentedseveral new choicesfor the next version of its mobile OS. Among these, access codes. As the developer specifies on its site, this is quite simply a “simpler and more secure connection method” than current passwords, generating a unique private key for each website you want to connect to.

During an interview with the magazineTom’s Guide, journalist Mark Spoonauer was able to speak with two Apple employees in order to better understand how this system works.Eagle in it, vice-president at Cupertino, explains in particular that traditional passwords are a “attack vector” major for hackers: it’s time to move up a gear to protect yourself.

The biometric solution

Adler then explains that each authentication requires using the biometric unlocking of your iPhone, usingFace ID ou Touch ID. Suffice to say that these are much more complex technologies to hack than a simple sequence of a few characters, the effectiveness of which has also been proven in the past to the point that these services are now democratized.

With this, the interview ofTom’s Guidealso mentions the case of connection on other devices. As an example, Kurt Night (from the Apple marketing department) takes the case of a user who would like to access an account from a computer runningWindows. In this case, theSign in with Applewill then generate an access code in the form of a QR code that simply flashes to unlock the site. A principle substantially similar to that of Google Authenticator, in short.

To discover this fall

To better understand the access codes, know that Apple presented a detailed video during the Worldwide Developer Conference. We discover how to use the functionality on macOS Ventura fromSafari, with stunning results in just a few seconds. Judge for yourself:

Finally, Apple reminds that all access codes are in factstored on your deviceand not online. This way, it is more difficult for a hacker to compromise them remotely.
