How does EyeSight, the most criticized feature of the Apple Vision Pro, work?

If there is one feature that has received strong criticism from Internet users regarding Apple and its Vision Pro, it is EyeSight. When active, the latter reproduces the gaze of the headset user in 3D, then reproduces it on the external screenWOLED provided by LG Display.

In itself, the technology objectively works well, but obviously, when it comes to reproducing a human characteristic on a computer, the result can often seem bizarre, even frightening. Some find that to be the case here, but this is nevertheless an early version and will undoubtedly improve in the future.

To learn more about Apple Vision Pro,iFixit took the helmet apart, who revealed all his secrets to them, includingthe way users' gaze is reproduced on screen using EyeSight.

“it shows a bunch of videos of your eyes”

To understand more precisely how EyeSight works,iFixitis based on the patent filed by Apple on this subject, as well as on the disassembly of the headset. After studying the subject in depth, they tell us that

When EyeSight displays your eyes, it doesn't just display a single video feed of your eyes; it shows a bunch of videos of your eyes. Exploring the inside of the glass shell, we found three layers for the front display: an enlarged layer, a lenticular layer, and the OLED display itself.

The criticisms of EyeSight are often the same; it is notably criticized for its lack of resolution and readability, thus making the look even more "bizarre". This lack of readability is due to several factors. The main ones are the fact that the base glass is dark, which directly implies a lack of brightness, which is itself exacerbated by the complexity of the lenticular layers used to create the 3D effect.

“Not great” repairability

Disassembly of the Vision Pro byiFixitalso allowed them to see that Apple's headset did not benefit from good repairability, but that they still had good surprises when dismantling it. Notably, for example, they were pleasantly surprised to learn that the side arms can be removed using the SIM card removal tool, and that the magnetic cushions were "even more user-friendly».
