Apple TV+ vs Disney+ comparison: what are the differences between these streaming apps?

Since the advent of Netflix at the top ofvideo on demand, competing alternatives are multiplying but few manage to stand out from the crowd. Among them,we find in particular Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+, published by two of the most powerful companies on the planet. But the Apple firm's solution, pre-installed on all its mobile devices, must now also deal with Disney+.

Disney+ was launched in France shortly after TV+, on April 7 to be precise, which marked a postponement of a few days due to the coronavirus pandemic which then continued to rage across the globe. But already, in the United States, the service had managed to win over ten million members in just… twenty-four hours. A remarkable score, and for good reason: unlike Hulu and others,Disneyalready has a solid reputation in the seventh art. We no longer count the blockbusters of the studio, which has long gone beyond the stage of simple productions for children. To the point of overshadowing Apple TV+?

Light catalogs, at Disney and Apple

Let's say it clearly: Disney+ and Apple TV+ are, among the big names in the sector, probably the streaming applicationsthe least providedof the market. This is certainly due to a late deployment compared to the competition, but also because these two platforms focus on original content for the most part. Understand that you will only find in their library films and series linked directly or indirectly to Disney or Apple, whether following a buyout or an investment in the assets of a distributor.

On Disney+, we find, for example, feature films from Pixar (whose CEO was also the same as that of Apple), animal documentaries from National Geographic, superheroes fromMarvel Cinematic Universe, the sagaStar Warsand the many tales revisited like those of the Brothers Grimm. On Apple TV+, on the other hand, the videos are relatively more recent and fewer in number, with episodes ofServant,Little AmericaetDefending Jacob. The cast is then hand-picked, with among others Nell Tiger Free, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks and Chris Evans at the helm.

Features: just what you need

On Disney+, viewers can choose between six tabs to navigate. The first,Welcome, offers personalized content suggestion based on profile and viewing history, while the second acts as a search bar. You can also call onMy Listto add videos to favorites, or directly find videosFilmsandSeries. Finally, the sectionOriginalsdisplays, as its name suggests, all official Disney productions. Finally, you can also access your profile to modify the screen resolution, which can go up to4K.

WithApple TV+, we don't really benefit from additional features except that the Apple TV app which allows access to them also rents and sells titles individually: count for example 9.99 euros to obtainThe Hateful Eight(by Quentin Tarantino), limited-time promotions being regularly posted online. Furthermore, thanks to “family sharing”, up to six people can watch Apple TV+ at the same time, which then costs less than one euro per month per user. Finally, we should also note that AirPlay and downloading to enjoy offline content are particularly effective from Apple TV+, but this is also the case with Disney+.

Design

Just like Disney+, Apple TV+ adopts a sober and minimalist interface, but perhaps even a little too much. In fact, there are few icons there and it is quickly difficult to get lost in the gallery of miniatures, the path to find the file for a series already started being alsonot very intuitive. With Disney+, the experience seems more fluid on a daily basis, on a midnight blue background which recalls the positioning of the firm in the 2000s. A point for Disney+ therefore, but not by much.

Apple TV+ is cheaper than Disney+

Apple TV+ subscription costs4.99 euros per month, which is likely to be the best offer in the field, all applications combined. But anyone who purchased an Apple device in the last few months can take advantage of a one-year free plan, and a seven-day trial period is automatically activated for each registration anyway.

As for the Disney+ subscription, it is sold at6.99 euros per monthbut although a one-week trial period was also put in place during the initial marketing in Europe, it seems that this is no longer the case at the moment. Added to this is an annual billing option for 69.99 euros, representing a significant saving of almost fifteen euros. And if you are not satisfied, you can cancel at any time from your customer area: no obligation and no additional costs.

Which devices are compatible?

Apple TV+, obviously, is seamlessly compatible with all Apple productslike the iPhone 11 and its triple rear photo sensor. To benefit from it, however, you must have installed the Apple TV application, which is only downloaded automatically from macOS Catalina on a computer and unfortunately does not haveno web client, while this is the case for Disney+. On the other hand, no app on the Google Play Store for Apple TV+, probably because of the historical conflict between the operating systems of the two giants, while Disney+ also has its Android application.

Conclusion and opinion: Apple TV+ vs Disney+

In short,Disney+ will probably appeal more to a young audience or familiesthanks to its classic films and series which already fill theaters when they are released. Indeed, even if its price costs twenty-four euros more per year than that of Apple TV+, it hosts a lot more content. We can therefore easily start an MCU marathon or become knowledgeable about the Skywalker family without missing videos afterwards. Of course, it's hard to match Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in terms of quantity, but it's already a great start.

Apple TV+ productions, for their part, are intended above all for picky targets inclined to discover new things. In addition, they will convince the majority of iPad and iPhone buyers who are fans of the head ecosystem, where Disney+ can be considered more general. Obviously, the possibility of testing the service for free will also work in favor of Apple TV+, which remains very qualitative even after a semester of loyalty. We can also praise Cupertino for its ability to invest massively in new titles, unlike Disney+ which is still relying on its achievements for many licenses.
