Comparison of iPhone 14 VS iPhone 12: all the differences

What's better about the iPhone 14?

Storage

To begin with, you should know that when purchasing an iPhone 14 you will not be entitled to the same storage capacity as an iPhone 12. The memory on the base model has thus doubled between the two versions, passing from64 Gofor the iPhone 12 to 128 GB for the iPhone 14. Both editions are entitled to a version with 256 GB. On the other hand, to move on to512 Go, you will have to invest in an iPhone 12. Good to know given that the space is not expandable (no SD card slot on either iPhone 12 or iPhone 14).

A better camera

Another key difference: the photo sensors. We are entitled to two lenses on each iPhone, although arranged differently. In fact, these are arranged inquincunxon the iPhone 14 while they are aligned with the shell on the back of the iPhone 12. But that's a detail.

No, what really changes is that on the iPhone 14, Apple offers theauto focuswhile it is only manual for the iPhone 12, as far as the front sensor is concerned. Still at the front, you should also know that the aperture offered is ƒ/1.9 for the most recent model. The iPhone 14 will therefore capture more light than the iPhone 12, limited to ƒ/2.2. The two mobiles are, however, equipped with a lens of the same definition: twelve megapixels.

On the video side however, theCinematic modewhich allows you to perform intelligent focuses like a pro is only offered with the iPhone 14. The iPhone 12 does have the capabilities to also trigger this functionality, but Cupertino has not updated it accordingly. And it's the same with the back photo sensor, whose openings are similarly better with an iPhone 14.

Autonomie : iPhone 12 VS iPhone 14

The iPhone 14 lasts a little longer on a single charge than the iPhone 12. We're talking here aboutseven o'clockand twenty-eight minutes for the new model, according to the test carried out by our colleagues at 01net. Butwith an iPhone 12, you'll be limited to seventeen hours and four minutesonly, for multipurpose use. That’s two hours less!

These results are quite close to those obtained in the laboratory by Apple.

Some more features

Beyond theCinematic mode, you should know that the iPhone 14 also has the functionality ofaccident detection. This capitalizes on different sensors such as the microphone, the accelerometer or even GPS to recognize accidents in cars or trucks.

The iPhone 12 is not entitled to this, although by comparing its technical sheet we realize once again that this device nevertheless has the necessary equipment. It's really a shame. With this, these are thePhotographic styles, or a selection of filters to retouch your photos, which are also reserved for iPhone 14.

To put an end to the differences on the software side, we can finally mention thesatellite connectivity. This is still reserved for iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The iPhone 14 performs better

Last brand difference between iPhone 14 and iPhone 12: power. Apple chose to integrate the processor from the iPhone 13 Pro into the iPhone 14, an A15 Bionic chip with a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU.The iPhone 12, for its part, is a generation lateand is entitled to the A14 Bionic chip with one less graphics card core. This means that your iPhone 14 will be more suitable for gaming and will better handle overheating.

The benchmarks also prove that the iPhone 14 is more efficient than the iPhone 12. With the Geekbench 5 app, we obtain the score of 4,616 points with a fully loaded iPhone 14 (multi-core) compared to 3,864 points “only ” for an iPhone 12 under the same conditions.

Some advantages with an iPhone 12

More color choices

Now let's move on to the benefits with the purchase of an iPhone 12. To begin with, you will be entitled to more colors offered in the Apple Store. Here, the manufacturer has released the mobile in six different versions: purple, blue (our favorite), green, red, white or black. On the iPhone 14 side, it will be: blue, purple, midnight, starlight or red. Purple being a little lighter on the iPhone 14, the same for purple.

A much more advantageous price

With this, the iPhone 12 is obviously cheaper compared to the iPhone 14. The exact prices are as follows:

  • iPhone 12 (64 Go) :809 euros
  • iPhone 12 (128 Go) : 859 euros
  • iPhone 12 (256 Go) : 979 euros
  • iPhone 14 (128 Go) :1 019 euros
  • iPhone 14 (256 Go) : 1 149 euros
  • iPhone 14 (512 Go) : 1 409 euros

In short, the iPhone 14 is 210 euros more expensive than the iPhone 12 in its basic version. But it's with double the memory and, as seen above, a few more key features as well as a faster processor.

The iPhone 12 is thinner

Design-wise, beyond the colors, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 14 are very similar. A major advantage concerns the most recent model: a more discreet notch, narrower than before. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 is thinnerthan the iPhone 14. We also see a difference of a few grams in terms of mass. This may be useful for those used to slim jeans. On the other hand, it is difficult to reuse the case from an iPhone 11 on an iPhone 12 whereas to move from an iPhone 13 to an iPhone 14, you will not necessarily need to invest in an additional case.

Headphones included

Apple includes wired headphonesEarPodsin the case of the iPhone 12. With the iPhone 14, it's over. No charger either, neither with one nor the other.

What doesn't change

Moreover, iPhone 12 and iPhone 14 are in factvery similar. Their screen, in particular, offers the same definition and is the same size if we exclude the case of the reduced notch on iPhone 14. The materials chosen for the chassis, too, are identical. On the network side, the iPhone 14 is well equipped with Bluetooth 5.3 compared to version 5.0 for the iPhone 12, but it is a fairly negligible difference. Other aspects of telecommunications are very similar: Wi-Fi, 5G, AirDrop…

Furthermore, the biometric unlocking solution ofFace IDis available on both iPhone 12 and iPhone 14. Finally, for the common points, we will notice that thewater resistanceis there too with our two adversaries, as is the integration of a dual port for the SIM card and the Lightning socket for power.

Our opinion: we prefer to choose the iPhone 12

In short, what can we conclude from this? The iPhone 14 and iPhone 12 look a lot alike, but under the hood there are many differences. The camera is better with the new model, as is its power and even its autonomy. Even some features are missing from the iPhone 12.

However, for us,these differences do not justify the price difference of almost 25%. We will therefore prefer to choose an iPhone 12 whose velocity or even the shots still allow us to obtain excellent results on a daily basis. Only real professionals will make the difference, but they are not Apple's preferred targets. If you're looking for a larger screen or another level of performance, it's better to compare the iPhone 14 Pro instead.or the iPhone 12 Pro.
