A first benchmark of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 chip, which would aim to compete with the Apple silicon program, makes it possible to better measure the performance of this potential chip. We see in fact that the machine reaches a score of no less than 9,337 points in multi-core, while Apple's M1 is limited to 8,316 points. Faced with these high-level results, the M2 remains at the top of the ranking with 9,742 points – according to numbers published on Geekbench.
We do not yet know under the hood of which devices this new motherboard could be integrated. But Qualcomm is above all favored by mobile manufacturers today. We notably find its processors powering high-end smartphones from Samsung or Xiaomi, where Google and Huawei rely on proprietary alternatives. At Apple, TSMC is responsible for designing the chips for the different iPhone models. Four were just revealed to the general public last month.
M2: power, always there
The M2 chip, designed by Apple, is also present not only on laptops but also on tablet models. This is particularly the case for the two iPad Pros available in stores today. With diagonals of 11 inches and 12.9 inches, these two editions present themselves as prime competitors for the large touch screens that Qualcomm could equip in the future.
The M2 chip, regardless of the version of the iPad Pro chosen, is here equipped with an eight-core CPU and an eight-core graphics card. This is what offers excellent rendering for the ProMotion refresh rate at one hundred and twenty frames per second, whether during video game sessions or for editing. With this, a sixteen-core Neural Engine is also included. For comparison, forthe Pixel Tablet, it is the Tensor G2 processor which takes care of the performance. Also with excellent reviews so far, as well as a proprietary design, like Tim Cook's company.
Soon the end of the M1?
The M1, for its part, is now only available on a few device models. It is on the one handthe fifth generation iPad Air, and on the other hand the MacBook Air M1 – still adopting the iconic design that made the success of the eponymous range.
With no new collection of chips being revealed in 2023, it is assumed that the M3 could arrive very quickly next year. This could then sign the end of M1, at least on Mac. Patience…
