Last fall, when Apple announcediPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the firm also caused a sensation by indicating that this new generationwill support the Thread protocol natively. This very useful technology for home automation, although absent from official specifications, is finallyalready present in several devicesreleased since September 2023. A surprising fact reported by the American mediaThe Verge.
Thread, Apple's well-kept secret
Without making the slightest publicity, the apple brand haswell integrated Threads technology into several of its products. A fact confirmed byFCC testing(Federal Communications Commission) which verified that the devices concerned complied with the established transmission standards for this protocol.
What devices and models are affected? There are eleven in all.L’iPad Pro 13 M411-inch Wi-Fi version, Cellular+Wi-Fi version and its 13-inch version.L'iPad Air M211-inch Cellular+Wi-Fi version and its 13-inch version.Le MacBook Air M315 inches,le MacBook Pro M314-inch MacBook Pro (M3 Pro and M3 Max) in 14 inches and the 16 inch version and finallythe iMac M3in two-port version and in 4-port version. Nice surprise!
Towards an even more connected home with Thread
Thread is a specially designed wireless communications protocolfor home automation and to facilitate the development of a real connected home. The latter is essential for the new Matter standard, which Apple helped develop to improve for smarter home connectivity.
This protocol, whose speed and range surpass those of Bluetooth, allows you to interconnect various devicessuch as smart lights, locks, thermostats and other sensors. Apple has been using Thread for several years now in its HomePods and Apple TVs, but this is the first time that this technology has been found in its Macs and iPads.
This possibly suggests that these devices will playa more central role in the future in home automation management, potentially as domestic hubs. This plausible hypothesis would clearly underline the brand's commitment todevelop more efficient solutions for connected homes.
- According to FCC tests, several Apple devices already integrate the Thread protocol.
- Eleven devices in total are affected, all released since September 2023.
- A surprise which would possibly mark a stronger commitment from Apple in the field of home automation and the connected home.
