It's a tradition, at the release of each new Apple machine, skillful hands of specialists like those from iFixit and others embark on a complete disassembly project. The Mac mini M4 which appeared in stores yesterday didn't miss out, it has already undergone the scalpel of a certain Brandon Geekabit on YouTube.
The procedure here teaches us some very interesting design details:
- Thedisassembly is not easy, it requires the use of T3 and T9 screwdrivers, but also take-off tools, Apple having had the good idea of using glue and adhesive strips to assemble its machine
- Replacing certain elements, such as the fan, the speaker or even the ignition button is possible, but on condition that you know how to use your screwdriver well, because the procedureremains laborious
- The largest element is the logic board, but the power supply takes up almost as much space. As the YouTuber points out, if Apple one day wants to further miniaturize its Mac mini, it would just have to remove the power supply and place it externally, as other small miniature PCs already do.
- Obviously, theRAM is not removable
- On the other hand, and this is a surprise: theSSD storage is good. It can be replaced
The last point is major, because it has two important implications in our eyes:
- In the event of a problem, early or not, the SSD component can be simply replaced and the procedure should not be too expensive.
- Provided you have compatible components on hand, it seems possible to increase the amount of storage of your Mac mini M4 after purchase!
Furthermore, YouTuber dosdude1 has already managed to double the quantity of GB in a Mac mini M4. However, for this, it does not take advantage of the removable nature of the storage card. He went further by directly replacing the NAND chips using his soldering iron.
Everything indicates in any case that with a little elbow grease and the right components on hand, in several ways (replacing the NAND component or replacing the removable logic card integrating the NAND chip), a specialist could consider increase the storage of your machine.
We still advise you to choose from the start the maximum GB that you can afford. Worst case scenario, add storage using an external SSD,like this excellent SanDisk disk, remains the simplest solution to implement.
The Mac mini 4 has in any case not finished surprising us…
