3nm chips on 2022 iPhones and Macs?

While we currently know the 5nm technology quite well on the chips of our smartphones, computers and tablets, the developments brought by the market giant TSMC could arrive much faster than some analysts have been able to announce in the past.

Indeed, according to the latest information from DigiTimes, the 2022 iPhone and Mac could include chips built in 3 nm. Still according to the media,TSMC, Apple's chip supplierplans to begin production of the latter during the second half of next year, which suggests marketing for the general public at the start of the school year or during the end of the year.

A jump from 5 to 3 nm?

Today the chip and semiconductor market is suffering, affected by a large shortage. The desire for innovation displayed by TSMC in these difficult timesshows the reliability and robustness of the company, which is a major asset for Apple in the development and design of tomorrow's iPhones.

Thus according to information from DigiTimes, the technology of the Taiwanese firm would be operational, which would allow Apple to offer an iPhone in 2022 with a chip engraved in 3 nm, a first for Apple which is currently stuck at 5 nm.

As for “intermediate” 4nm technology, it should be used for other models from the Apple brand, notably Macs. But for the moment no precise date has been given by DigiTimes on the launch of these computers with a brand new chip. Given TSMC's production rate, we will most certainly have to wait until 2022 even if the wildest rumors speak of a 4nm chip on the MacBook Pro M1X which is expected at the end of the year.
