Edward Snowden calls CSAM tools a “disaster”

He is known to be the greatest whistleblower of the 21st century. His name attached to the largest mass surveillance scandal ever uncovered, Edward Snowden has since been a voice that we listen to, especially when it comes to data privacy.

Rather on the same length as the former NSA employee, Apple was currently doing everything to protect the private interests of its users. But since the middle of August, the apple brand has attracted the wrath of defenders of confidentiality and individual freedoms on the internet. However, everything started with an innocuous press release from Apple. The latter announced that it would launch a new tool in the coming months. These tools, called CSAM, will compare photos on iCloud accounts with a database of exploited or missing children.

The idea is to use the power of iCloud and Apple to help the fight against child trafficking and child pornography. But as beautiful as the cause is, Snowden fears that this solution will allow other people, much less intentional than the Apple, to carry out mass surveillance or censorship.

“A disaster in the making”

These concerns are already shared byPrinceton academics, who also stepped up to the plate against Apple asking the Cupertino company not to launch its tools, the privacy of Apple users depending on it.

In a recent statement, Edward Snowden goes further. The whistleblower explains that these tools are disasters in the making and that Apple must be stopped before it is too late. According to Snowden these tools will “erase the line between devices that work for you, and devices that work for them”.

Apple has tried to explain its point of view several times, especially in an FAQ. According to the latest information from Apple, Park, Tim Cook and others would still be ready to launch the CSAM tools at the end of this year, they should in fact be integrated into an iOS update 15.
