We already know that the “Locate” (Find My) application is very useful for finding a lost Apple device. It has just proven its effectiveness in cases of theft. This story takes place on the beach in Grand Bend, Ontario where a man has his iPhone stolen.
He then contacted the local police to report that his smartphone and a pair of shoes had been stolen. It also turns out that the latter had installed and configured the Find My app on his phone.
The app will get even better on iOS 15
Thanks to iCloud, the police managed to arrest a 70-year-old man from the United Kingdom. Placed in police custody, he will have to answer for two crimes: theft of less than 5,000 dollars and possession of property obtained by a crime of less than 5,000 dollars. Released, the latter will soon return to court for his judgment.
In any case, this is further proof of the usefulness of the Find My system. Note that the lattershould improve further in iOS 15. Recently, we explained to you in particular that it should make it possible to locate a device, even if it is turned off.
Let us also remember that in the past, this application had already been talked about. Thus, in 2016, hackers allegedly tried to trick users into believing that their device had been compromised by using Find my to lock the iPhone. They were asked to pay a ransomwhich then amounted to $50.
Very complex to carry out, this hack was also quite simple to foil since victims only needed to use the iPhone unlock code to remove this message.
