During Apple's latest keynote, called Far Out, the apple brand presentedthe latest iPhone 14as well as the features that will make these phones so charming. Among them, we find emergency communication by satellite.
During its presentation from Cupertino, Apple did not give many details on the origin of the satellites used, and some people may have thought that the apple brand had formed a partnership with SpaceX, Elon Musk's company .
The latter is very present in space, notably with the Starlink constellation which has so far sent more than 20,000 satellites into space. Present all around the planet, they would have been the perfect candidates to host Apple's new communication system, but ultimately, they were not selected.
Elon Musk confirms discussions are still ongoing
Questioned on the subject, Elon Musk explains that discussions did take place between his company and that of Cupertino. In a response given on Twitter, the businessman explains that Starlink satellites are used to connect users to the internet, and not to the telephone network as Apple proposes.
He adds that he is still in discussions with Apple to provide new data for this satellite communication offer. This is not the first time that SpaceX has been interested in the world of telephony.
If their internet connection offer has proven itself, it has succeeded in attracting large companies such as the operator T-Mobile. The latter announced that a partnership had just been established between the two firms and that it should result inthe creation of the first telephone package including a satellite offer.
Satellites: the antennas of tomorrow?
Today the level of hardware technology in our phones allows us to communicate directly with satellites. If the latter have their advantage (they are accessible from any point on Earth), they also have disadvantages (the latency level is significantly higher than the terrestrial network).
On this point Elon Musk assured that with time and a sufficient number of satellites in space the two connection systems could be similar. We are therefore waiting to see what the 2.0 satellites ofStarlinkwhich should reach orbit in the coming months.
