Apple Watch study: 90 days to finish a marathon?

Connected watchesApple are of particular interestInsome health studies. They are in fact capable of measuring a wide variety of metrics, particularly cardiovascular status. Of course, users have the choice not to share this data, but they can, if they wish, participate in the research by authorizing Apple to collect it.

In order to carry out this type of study, the Apple firm joined forces with theAmerican Heart Association, as well asBrigham and Women’s Hospital, a subsidiary of theHarvard Medical School.

In the middle of the marathon period, and at the dawn of the Paris Olympic Games, the three partners examined the data of 201,471 users. Among them, a variety of profiles, ranging from people preparing for a marathon to Sunday athletes. The analysis also includes other less active individuals who do not exercise, but still walk regularly. Age data is unfortunately not available.

Less than 1% confirmed

The study first reveals thatless than 1% of participantsrun marathons. Out of 201,471 participants: “More than 1,500 people have run approximately 2,623 marathons in total, and more than 50% of participants completed at least one running workout of 5K or more.» The researchers also shared that “54% of participants completed a single longest workout of at least 5km — and almost 14% completed at least 10km in one go.»

When it comes to top performers, there is no secret. Everyone who achieved a good result trained for long distances (10 km) every week before the marathon.

90 minutes for the average person?

The researchers then tried to calculate the time it would take participants on average to complete the marathon, and the result was quite surprising. We do not know the motivations which led to determining this average time, because it is mainly based on data from non-athlete individuals. To obtain an estimate, the scientists crossed training data from athletes with walking data from non-athletes.

The result is that in median time, based only on the figures for April 2023, it is necessary90 days to complete a marathon. The researchers point out, however, that the result is probably underestimated. It is indeed likely that it is less important.

Speaking of physical activity, we recently discoveredwhich region was the most sporty in France.
