Europe vs Apple, episode 12: privacy and the App Store

The European Union has asked Apple toremove from the App Store all services that track their users under the pretext of fighting COVID-19. More and more initiatives are multiplying with this objective, includingsome respect the privacy of userswhileothers are much more controversial.

The principle of these applications is to collect information on the geolocation of Internet users, via Bluetooth and GPS, to then alert potential risks of contamination if the tester has approached a risk area. But some would already take advantage of it toresell the datas harvested…

TheEuropean Commission, at the origin of these recommendations, also asked Google to clean its Play Store of the same type of “spyware”. This is far from being the first time that our authorities have dealt with such delicate subjects with the American giants,but relaxation seems to have been there for a few weeks.

On the other hand, we know Apple's appetite forsecurityof its customers, the firm describing iOS as “safest operating system in the world” on its official website. It would therefore not be surprising to see the company follow this advice, by adding this type of applications to the already long list of prohibited ones from the App Store, among which we now find, among others, dating and horoscopes.
