In the flood of announcements last night duringthis WWDC, we almost forgot that Apple presented tvOS 17. If the next update of your Apple TV was not going to revolutionize the genre, one feature particularly caught our attention.
In fact, Tim Cook's teams announced last night that the native FaceTime application would have the right to its version specific to tvOS. With this new feature, the Apple TV 4K will become more than just a decoder, but a household object, just like the HomePod.
In detail, Apple explains that it will be possible to make calls directly from your television or to switch a call already in progress from an iPhone or iPad tol’Apple TV 4 K. According to Bob Borchers, Apple's vice president in charge of products and marketing, this new feature should make the Apple TV "even more user-friendly and intuitive." He describes it as “the ultimate device to have in your living room.” »
iPhone and iPad: never far away
Technically the iPhone and iPad will still be very useful during a FaceTime call with an Apple TV. In fact, the cameras of the phone or tablet will act as a webcam here. This is already the case on Mac, and now Apple is adding this new connection between its devices in the middle of our living room.
The iPhone then becomes the camera of our call while the television screen is responsible for transmitting the image directly in front of our eyes. The arrival of the FaceTime application in Apple TV is accompanied by other already well-known features such as “Centered Frame” which allows the camera to be oriented according to the user's movements in a room.
Apple explains that it does not want to make FaceTime original and other videoconferencing applications will appear during the year within tvOS. This should be the case for Zoom, Cisco and Webex. This healthy competition will allow users to work from their Apple TV, a first.
