Safari reveals a hidden Find My function: for future AirTags?

The Find My app lets you find your Apple devices. This works for an iPhone, an iPad, but also a Mac or even accessories marked with the Apple, Apple Watch and AirPods in particular. On the other hand, it doesn't work for third-party accessories... For now!

Indeed, as part of CES 2021, Belkin hasannounced to prepare headphones compatible with Apple's Find service. These are the SoundForm Freedom, scheduled for release next spring.

Other third-party objects could be seen in Locate in the future, for example with the help of the object tracker that the Californian firm would prepare, currently called“AirTag”. Rumors about this project have been numerous and persistent in recent months. In addition, a new clue was revealed by our colleagues at MacRumors recently, with the help of one of their readers.

The latter discovered that upon returning acertain address in Safari, the Locate app launched with aspecial tab normally inaccessibleby opening the same app in the classic way. The tab is called “Objects” and displays an illustration already seen in the past, containing 3 items, a bike, a backpack and keys. To get there and test for yourself, follow the following steps:

  • In the Safari app, in the address bar type “findmy://items”
  • Do “Access”
  • The Find My app opens to the “Objects” tab
  • You can try adding an item to see what it looks like to begin pairing a Find Find compatible accessory.

This works on iPhone and iPad running iOS 14.3 or iPadOS 14.3 or later.

This is certainly where the Belkin headphones will be able to be registered and benefit from the Find My service. This may also be where AirTags object sensors can be tracked.

In any case, we can't wait to know which third-party products or Apple products will be able to take advantage of this practical Locate feature. The AirTags, which some analysts were already predicting for 2020, have still not shown up, while Samsung yesterday showed its home object sensors, theSmartTag, during its Unpacked event, having also revealed anew Galaxy S21.
