Google just presented its new Pixel 8 and 8 Pro yesterday. These two smartphones will be the first to use Android 14 upon release. With this new version of the operating system, Google announces, it wants to become a strong player in the smartphone market, currently in great difficulty.
Google knows it, the market is today outrageously dominated by Apple which alone manages to overtake the armada of devices launched by Samsung and other Android companies like Xiaomi, Oppo or OnePlus. With its Pixels 8 and 8 pros, Google wants to (finally) take the position of first competitor to the iPhone 15, dominating the competition on Android.
What to remember about the Pixel 8 ?
The Pixel 8 presented yesterday by Googleis a smartphone perfectly of its time. USB-C is obviously included, as is a large 6.2-inch 120 Hz screen. On this point, the Mountain View company is doing better than its Cupertino neighbor. The iPhone 15 still has a 60Hz screen.
With the Google Tensor G3 chip, Google hopes to get a head start on other Android smartphones. The device should succeed in competing with the iPhone 15 (equipped with last year's A16 chips). It should nevertheless be a little short to fight with the A17 pro of the iPhone 15 pro and pro Max.
The Pixel 8 pro: perfection under Android ?
The Pixel 8 pro broadly follows the codes of the Pixel 8. The phone still has a 6.2-inch screen and a G3 chip. The few nuances between the two models are found in storage (up to 1 TB on the Pixel 8 pro) and RAM (12 GB on the Pro, 8 on the Pixel 8).
When it comes to photo sensors, the Pro still stands out. If the main sensor is the same on both devices (50Mp), the ultra-wide angle is very different between Pro and “classic”. It thus reaches 48 MP on the high-end model compared to only 12 for the entry-level version.
Finally the Pixel 8 pro has, asl’iPhone 15 Pro Maxa “periscope” telephoto lens with a x5 optical zoom option. The sensor offers 48 MP for ever more precise and bright photos. Both phones are already available on the Google online store.
The Pixel 8 is sold for €799. It costs €1099 for the Pixel 8 pro. These prices are still a notch below those of Apple with its iPhone 15 (€969) and 15 pro (€1,229).
