Google plans to automatically delete browsing history after 18 months

If companies like Apple make confidentiality their hobby horse, this is far from being the case for all tech companies... Particularly Google, whose model is based on advertising. However, the latter seems to want to adapt to the concerns of users of its services regarding the protection of privacy.

Google announced some new features, including the fact that it would automatically (and by default) delete users' browsing history after 18 months. This concerns the information collected by the browser, but alsolocation in the Maps app, voice queries and YouTube.

Privacy is at the heart of everything we do, and we’ll keep challenging ourselves to do more with less. As a next step, today we’re changing our data retention practices to make auto-delete the default for our core activity settings.https://t.co/4hW0L23iZV

Deleting history and simplifying access to private browsing mode

The setting is not activated by default for Internet users already using Google, indicates the firm. The latter specifies: “We'll actively remind you of the auto-delete controls available to you via in-product notifications and emails, so you can choose the auto-delete setting that's right for you". In short, windows will indicate to the user that he can modify the parameters.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai states in a post that the deletion of data on YouTube will be “set to 36 months by default if you create a new account or activate your YouTube history for the first time". Current users can “always choose the automatic deletion option of 3 or 18 months».

Google also promises to simplify access to private browsing mode on its Chrome browser. To access it on mobile, users will just have to long press on their profile photo. The feature is already available on iOS and will soon be rolled out to Android.
