iFixit teardown of the new iPad: old-fashioned CPU, new screen and other details

After the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Apple Watch Series 5, it's the turn of the new iPad presented by Apple at the beginning of the month to pass into the expert hands of the iFixit site.

The latter completely disassembled the new Apple tablet to reveal its interior and discover what Apple did not reveal on its website or during the conference.

An iPhone 7 CPU, but more RAM

First notable feature, which is not a surprise, since its technical sheet already indicates it, the processor of the new iPad is an A10 Fusion chip. This is the same model as the chip in the old iPad from 2018. We also find such a processor on the iPhone 7 from 2016. This means that the new iPad is equipped with a CPU that is already 3 years old. . However, given the quality and power of the Ax chips, this A10 Fusion can still be more than sufficient for classic use of an entry-level iPad.

In addition, the latter gains 1 GB of RAM over the previous generation, and now includes 3 in total.

Extra millimeters for the case and screen

The 2019 version of the iPad is slightly larger than its predecessor (but not thicker).

This is obviously due to the integration of a new 10.2-inch diagonal screen panel. Note that the case is now the same size as that of the recent 10.5-inch iPad Air.

Equipped with a Smart Connector, the new 2019 iPad is compatible with the Smart Keyboard for the 10.5-inch iPad Air.Find the latter here for 159.99 euros.

Also, while the screen is a bit bigger, the battery remains the same. However, the autonomy does not change between the old 2018 model and the 2019 model, i.e. 10 hours web/video browsing on Wi-Fi, 9 hours on cellular network.

Ultimately, the 2019 10.2-inch iPad gets an iFixit repairability rating of 2/10, which is really not good. But the 2018 iPad recorded the same score. This year, however, Apple has used even more adhesive to hold the components of its tablet in place, while the Lightning connector is soldered to the board itself. Suffice it to say that repairs on this new iPad remain as nightmarish as ever.
