For years, iFixit has accustomed us to videos and articles on disassembly of electronic products that have just been released. And after havingdisassembled the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the repair specialist treats us with a YouTube videoiPhone 15 teardown. However, this video is a little special since in addition to having disassembled the latest iPhone, iFixit presents us with microscopic views of certain elements of the smartphone.
For example, we obtain microscopic views of the battery connectors, screen pixels, or even camera pixels. For those who have always been curious about the inside of their smartphones, the iFixit video is very interesting.
Good repairability, in theory
The interest of iFixit's disassembly, in addition to satisfying our curiosity, is to show us how the iPhone is disassembled. And on this subject, the iPhone 15 has very many similarities with the iPhone 14 released in 2022. Thanks to the opening on the back of the device, it is still easy to access all the components.
According to iFixit, this architecture is a huge gain in terms of repairability. Additionally, Apple has reportedly made new components modular, making repairs even easier. So, in theory, Apple has developed a product that is easily repaired.
The problem with Apple products?
Unfortunately, these design efforts are hampered by the coupling of the parts. Indeed, because of this coupling, we cannot, for example, interchange certain parts of two identical models. This requires repairers or those who wish to repair their devices themselves to purchase their replacement parts from Apple or its official partners.
For example, iFixit purchased two iPhone 15 Pro Max, and attempted to swap the Lidar modules of these two smartphones. This caused a camera bug.
It is also because of this problem with the coupling of parts that the iPhone 14 has an iFixit repairability score of 4 out of 10, even though it should be one of the easiest smartphones to repair . Furthermore, while waiting for the release of spare parts and repair manuals for the iPhone 15, iFixit gave this model a repairability rating of 4 out of 10. But this rating should change after the release of manuals and spare parts.
Not the same sensor as the iPhone 15 Pro
Otherwise, the teardown carried out by iFixit also reveals new information on the technical sheet of the iPhone 15. Like the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 has a 48 megapixel main sensor. However, while the resolution is the same, the iPhone 15 has a different sensor. The iPhone 15's 48-megapixel sensor is about 22% smaller than the iPhone 15 Pro's sensor. And according to iFixit, the iPhone 15 should therefore perform a little less well than the iPhone 15 Pro when the lighting is poor.
