- Intel does not only sell processors to computer manufacturers: the company also offers its own very open PCs.
- However, this activity is about to stop
- The customizable model has a bright future ahead of it, with awareness linked to global warming
Intel shuts down NUCs. Acronym for Next Unit of Compute, this range of computers is marketed by Intel in parallel with its activity as a chip supplier to other PC manufacturers. But the founder has just started to warn his partners: the homemade adventure is about to end. The information comes from an email sent directly to them.
Among the different NUC models released so far, we think in particular of the Mini PC collection, which does not only have the name in common with Apple's eponymous central units. The format is indeed reminiscent of that of the Mac mini, even if the measurements or colors are of course not necessarily identical.
Apple silicon: the giant's alternative already well established
To continue, we know that Apple also markets Macs equipped with its own chips. The first was a Mac mini in 2020, in the form of a developer kit such asthe onewhich seems to be waiting for the Vision Pro mixed reality headset. More recently, we remember that a brand new MacBook Air with a fifteen-inch diagonal arrived on the market just last month. The device will then be unveiled during the Worldwide Developer Conference and quickly praised by critics, for its excellent quality/price ratio from the Apple firm.
At the same time, Cupertino also renewed its most powerful machine to date: the Mac Pro. Here, the RAM can reach no less than 192 GB with the M2 Ultra chip, not to mention 8 TB of internal storage and the integration of a 76-core graphics card. A real racing beast.
What alternative?
The advantage of the NUC was still to offer customizable hardware, including installations of Linux platforms for the most DIY enthusiasts. It's difficult to find a solution at Apple, which limits its laptops and desktop computers to macOS.
On the other hand, with its printed circuits clearly open to third-party components, the Raspberry Pi remains a very good choice today for creating a tailor-made workstation. We also think of the case oflaptopsrepairablefrom Dell, but whose marketing is not very similar. Objective: a gesture for the environment, where the repairability rating of Macs still raises questions…
