As you may know,TikTokis under threat of a ban in the United States from January 19, 2025. American justice could nevertheless decide otherwise, unless Donald Trump manages to come to the rescue of the Chinese platform. Regardless, one European country has decided to ban the service right now: Albania. Let's take stock.
A contested ban
The Prime Minister of this country, Edi Rama, indicated this Sunday that TikTok will close its doors at the beginning of 2025. This is in no way a whim, but a“well-considered decision”.
This choice follows the death of a 14-year-old teenager a few weeks ago during a brawl stemming from a conflict on social networks. TikTok requested clarification from the government, saying:“We found no evidence that the perpetrator or victim had TikTok accounts”.
But the socialist leader does not budge:
TikTok has no reason to demand clarification from Albania, because, in Albania, it is the Albanians who make the decisions, not the owners of the TikTok algorithm. Pretending that the teen's murder has no connection to TikTok because the conflict did not originate on the platform demonstrates a failure to grasp the seriousness of the threat that TikTok poses to children and youth today 'today.
It remains to be seen whether this decision will be imitated elsewhere. In the European Union, it's a little more complicated, because large platforms like TikTok operate under the umbrella of regulationsDSAand DMA. The latter provide for possible bans, but only if repeated breaches of the legislation are observed.
