iOS 14: Apple found a solution for clipboard security

During the opening keynote of theWorldwide Developer Conference, Apple teams presented the next version of iOS to the general public. This offersmany new features which can be discovered in detail at this address. Among them, we once again find a particular emphasis placed on the protection of personal data, in particular thanks toa dedicated section in the App Store application sheets, which is also coming to iPad and Mac.

Three months ago,a rather disturbing report from cybersecurity researchers revealed that several flagship publishers on iPhone were allowing themselves toread clipboard contents(i.e. text that you copy and paste elsewhere) without permission. Normal, since in reality the user has never had any control over whether or not to block access to this private information. However, they can be relatively sensitive, for example when you retrieve a password in Chrome to copy it in order to connect to a new app whose web client you want to abandon.

What the developers offer

Mysk, named after those who discovered the flaw a few months ago, has just published the following post on Twitter, where we can see in video that iOS 14 displays anotificationwhenever a “spy” application reads the contents of the clipboard. The format of the bubble also contrasts particularly with the other system alerts, and recalls the rounded corners of the new dock under macOS Big Sur.

Looks like@applefixed the clipboard privacy issue we highlighted earlier this year. Apple said it wasn’t an issue, but surprisingly they fixed it in#iOS14the exact way we recommended in our article.
A notification is shown every time an app or widget reads the clipboard

We still regret not still having the possibility of limiting access to copied texts, while it is now easy to block GPS in order to avoid tracking by geolocation. Perhaps coming in the second OS beta?
