iOS 17 / iPadOS 17: the 4 new health features

  • Health comes to iPadOS 17 and Journal to iOS 17
  • The emotional states register is now available in the Health app
  • A new alert fights against the risks of myopia on iPhone

At the Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple presented the new versions of iPadOS and iOS to the general public. For the moment, however, it is only possible to test them in beta version. But we looked into the question, just to come back to the most interesting features of the moment, particularly in terms of well-being. It is assumed that these will be available in final version in September, when they will also be releasedthe iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro.

1 – The Health app arrives on iPad

To begin with, we know that the Health app, available on iPhone for some time now, arrivefinally on iPad. It includes most of the options already available on mobile, such as monitoring heart rate, number of steps or even calories burned. Users can also use it as a virtual pillbox, to be notified when to take medication.

2 –Screen distance

With this, Apple just recently introduced the featureScreen distance. On iOS 17, this must be activated manually and then allows you to receive an alert if your eyes are too close to the display. Only downside: we tested it, and this notification is triggered as soon as the gaze is too far forward, without the slightest delay. However, it is indeed in the context of a prolonged position that vision can be damaged in this way, in particular by promoting the appearance of myopia.

3 – Journal

During WWDC, Apple also presented a brand new native app that will be present in iOS 17: Journal. However, the platform will not be available at launch; you will have to wait until the next update to be entitled to it.

Journal allows you to take care of your mental health by writing down your thoughts of the day, like a diary. Internet users can also associate photos or GPS positions with their writing, all end-to-end encrypted for the sake of confidentiality. An API dedicated to developers is also included, for integration with their services.

4 – Register of emotional states

Finally, note that the Health app also allows you to monitor your emotional states, by asking you every day how you feel. Statistics are then available to know how our feelings evolve throughout the week, as illustrated below.
