iPadOS 17: the 3 new iPad exclusive features (and those we're still waiting for)

  • Some features announced at WWDC are exclusive to iPadOS 17
  • The Health app comes to iPad
  • Still no Calculator app on Apple tablets, though

Last month, Apple unsurprisingly presented iPadOS 17 and its share of new features. On the menu, we find in particular serious improvements for Safari and for many other apps, but most of these additions can also be found on iPhone with iOS 17. This is, however, not the case for a few rare exceptions, on which we We decided to come back today, before the final version is released this fall. Let's take stock.

What new features are exclusive to iPadOS 17 this year?

1 – Lock screen improves drastically

To begin with, the novelty which is probably positioned as the most visual of iPadOS 17 is obviously its ability to personalize the locked screen as you wish. This was already possible on iPhone since iOS 16, but many users were impatiently awaiting the deployment of this asset on Apple's large touch screens.

It is now a done deal, notably with the arrival of widgetsLive Activitiesto follow a flight in real time, the arrival of a meal with a foodtech app or even the progress of a timer triggered from the Clock app.

2 – Santé finally arrives on iPad!

With this, the Health app is arriving for the first time on iPad with iPadOS 17. As many know, this has also been available on iPhone for a while. In all likelihood, all of its features are now accessible on tablets, without exception. The design has of course been optimized for diagonals up to 12.9 inches, and the least we can say is that it is quite successful – according to the first testers who looked into the subject.

Health allows you to consult graphs compiling activity data recorded by Apple Watches, but also to create reminders to remember to take your treatments. To go further, women can even use it to track their menstrual cycle, and mental health advice is also included.

3 – Advanced PDF management

Thanks to iPadOS 17, we can now also take advantage of autofill directly in PDF documents. However, not all iPads are announced as compatible, but this is the case for the third generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro and later or even the “classic” eighth generation, ninth generation and tenth generation iPads.

Bonus: multiple timers

This is not exclusive to iPadOS 17, but the possibility of programming multiple timers from the Clock app also accessible on iOS 17 will also be very practical for those who use tablets in the kitchen. A novelty that echoes therumorsconcerning a supposed competitor to the Amazon Echo and the Nest Hub, from Apple…

What's new that we're still waiting for...

A calculator app

Despite everything, the Calculator app continues to be exclusive to iPhones and Macs today – without really understanding why. No hints about a possible port to iPad have been published recently. To remedy this, there are many alternatives on the App Store, sometimes free, sometimes paid, but never as well integrated as a native platform could be.

Being able to create multiple sessions

With this, it could be rather wise to be able to create several sessions to, for example, lend the iPad to your children, and only offer them a certain limited range of functionalities. Restaurant owners, who are very fond of tablets with tablets, could also appreciate it to create a working environment dedicated to each of their employees in order to act as a cash register. Android already allows you to implement such strategies; it would therefore be enough to draw inspiration from it.

Journal

Finally, let's also remember that the new appJournalannounced at WWDC has only been for iPhone for the moment. We don't know if or when it could land on iPad.
