Let's continue ouroverview of what's new in iOS 8
with a new feature that will radically change the way we use the iPhone,
Safari and apps.
This year, with iOS 8, Apple has chosen to open up iOS a little. It is
as well as widgets appeared. Today it is
extensions that we are going to tackle. Present in the iOS browser,
they should also be able to lend a hand to native apps,
as we could see with the photo app.
A change of size
Until now on iOS each application is isolated from the rest of the system
in what Apple calls a 'sandbox'. So the app
can only access its own data. If she wants to be able to draw from
photos, contacts… she must ask permission from
the user.
With iOS 8 and the extensions, App Store applications will be able to
broaden their scope of expertise and offer their services to other apps
but not just anyhow. The 'sandbox' principle remains in place, but it
was adapted.
The extension will actually live its life inside the sandbox of
the app it comes from. The new thing is that she will be able to
communicate with others through the system, while following the
iOS security mechanism. In this way iOS remains secure while
opening a little more.
With the extensions, users like us will be able to
customize iOS a little more. During Monday's keynote, we were able to see Craig
Federighiadd a Pinterest button to Safarior even again
use a third-party in-browser translator.
It will also be possible toadd filters from your photo app
preferred in the native app. Of course, it is easy to imagine that
the possibilities will quickly become numerous. It is also thanks to these
new extensions that we will have the possibility of usingkeyboards
alternatives in iOS.
Thanks to this, Apple once again avoids the user having to
juggle applications. With its extensions, iOS 8 becomes much more
convenient to use and more open.
Now the ball is in the developers' court.
