Apple has been working on the development of Siri for years. During the last WWDC, the Cupertino company even presenteda major change for the voice assistant of Apple products. The latter will indeed be able to operate without internet to respond to basic commands such as starting a timer, adding a reminder, etc.
This long-awaited feature contrasts greatly with Apple's choice this week regarding Siri and third-party applications. Indeed, quite mysteriously the Apple brand has decided that certain voice commands made with Siri will no longer be available under iOS 15. In an e-mail sent to developers working with the Apple brand, the latter explains that it will be for example impossible to configure vehicles via Siri on CarPlay or even search for photos from third-party services. These voice commands were mostly introduced when third-party support for Siri was first added, with iOS 10. Apple has provided no reason for their abrupt removal.
A feature that is (too) little used?
Today it was possible for third-party developers to offer voice control working with Apple's assistant, althoughnative solutions have always been more practical to usethan third-party options.
The most likely explanation for why Apple is ending support for these voice commands would lie more with developers than within the walls of Apple Park. Indeed, the use of these commands by developers was low, and owners of iPhone, iPad and other products with Siri also made very little use of third-party voice commands.
Among the most used third-party Siri commands, vehicle setup with CarPlay is at the top of the list. The thousands of people using their voice assistant will therefore have to find another way to operate from iOS 15whose release to the general public is planned for this fall.
