With the exitsd’iOS 16, iPadOS16 and macOS Ventura this fall, Apple once again intends to set an example in terms of cybersecurity. It is in this sense that the Cupertino company presented its new Lockdown Mode, a functionality which will provide “extreme and optional” protection for users who face targeted threats.
A welcome system for all spyware victims
We are thinking here in particular of the Pegasus scandal, named after this software which was supposed to be used to spy on criminals and terrorists, but which was also used to monitor journalists, activists, heads of state, and certain political opponents. too embarrassing in many countries.
Apple presents this new device as follows:
Lockdown Mode provides an extreme, optional level of security for those very few users who, because of who they are or what they do, may be personally targeted by some of the most sophisticated digital threats, like those from NSO Group and other private companies developing state-sponsored mercenary spyware. Enabling Lockdown Mode in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura further strengthens device defenses and strictly limits certain features, sharply reducing the attack surface that could potentially be exploited by highly targeted mercenary spyware.
Among the measures provided for in this Lockdown Mode, we note in particular the blocking of attachments in messages, or the deactivation of FaceTime calls with strangers, as well as other measures which aim to combat any intrusion on the device.
Remember that iOS 16 also includes many other very welcome new options. To discover them in detail, you can consultour dedicated article.
