iPhone 11: Deep Fusion mode arrives in the next iOS beta (operation and limitations)

During its special iPhone back-to-school keynote, Apple talked a lot about the photo capabilities of the new iPhones, and in particular about a new automatic photo enhancement technology, called Deep Fusion. This is not yet available for iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro users, but should be very soon.

According to the American newspapers The Verge and Techcrunch who spoke with Apple, this functionality will be available inan upcoming beta of iOS 13.2. Maybe not beta 1 which is arriving today for developers, but probably a next beta after this one.

As a reminder, Deep Fusion is automatically applied to photos without the user noticing and aims to improve the quality of photos taken in moderate to low light situations.

The Deep Fusion will take nine photos instantly and with different exposure levels, then will take the best of each shot to combine them into a single, higher quality image.

The final image is supposed to offer a higher level of detail, particularly for photos that include complex textures such as clothing mesh or people's skin, but also for moving objects.

Here are some shots of Apple using Deep Fusion.

If the user goes to their camera roll right after taking the photo, they may see a temporary image, while waiting for Deep Fusion working in the background to produce the final shot. A process that should only take a second longer than smart HDR. This means that Deep Fusion does not work with burst photo shooting.

Deep Fusion will improve photos taken with the wide angle for the iPhone 11, but not the ultra wide angle. For the iPhone 11 Pro, this will work with the wide-angle, but also photos taken with the telephoto lens.

Also note that Deep Fusion will not work if the user has activated the “Capture out of frame” in the camera settings.

As a reminder, Deep Fusion requires the A13 chip to do the photo processing work, and it will therefore only be available on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.
